Disaster Risk Financing Solutions for Farmers and Fishers in Fiji, and Their Preferences

This study, conducted under the Pacific Insurance and Climate Adaptation Programme (PICAP), examines the perspectives of farmers and fishers in Fiji regarding their exposure to climate risks, particularly cyclones and droughts, and their coping and adaptation strategies. A survey of 488 farmers and fishers from 28 villages and 21 settlements on Vanua Levu, combined with focus group discussions and a discrete choice experiment, reveals the challenges these communities face due to limited access to disaster risk financing options. The study also explores their preferences for climate risk insurance and other financial and institutional support to better cope with the impacts of extreme weather events.
