Economic Impacts of Natural Hazards on Vulnerable Populations in Tonga

Tonga is highly vulnerable to natural hazards, particularly tropical cyclones, which cause significant property damage and long-term economic harm. The country’s small economy, reliant on subsistence agriculture and small businesses, is especially susceptible to climate change, which exacerbates the frequency of extreme weather events, sea level rise, and disruptions to agriculture and fisheries. Natural hazards disproportionately affect the poorest populations, workers in the informal economy, women, and youth, with limited resources to cope during and after disasters. Women face additional challenges, including economic disadvantage and gender-based violence during crises, while youth suffer long-term setbacks in education and employment. This vulnerability highlights the need for targeted interventions to support the most affected communities and enhance resilience in Tonga’s economy and society.
