Gender Considerations for Disaster Risk Financing in Fiji

The Pacific Insurance and Climate Adaptation Programme has developed a policy brief to address the gender differences in vulnerability to extreme weather events, such as storms and cyclones, in Small Island Developing States (SIDS). The brief highlights how factors like education, employment, income, and household roles affect men and women differently, influencing their ability to access financial instruments, cope with disasters, and recover. It emphasizes the importance of considering these differences when designing disaster risk financing instruments, including climate risk insurance, to enhance financial preparedness for climate change and natural hazards. The document also discusses the impacts of extreme weather on gender-based violence and complements efforts like Fiji’s National Gender Policy to improve resilience and preparedness.
